Reiki For Self-Care

1. ALWAYS begin with Thanks.

2. Draw an invisible Cho Ku Rei on both of your palms with your finger, press your hands together in a prayer position in front of your heart chakra (the middle of your chest) and chant the name Cho Ku Rei (Choe–Koo-Ray) 3 times.

3. State your intention. An example is, "Thank you for this loving energy that heals my mind, heart, body, and spirit, filling my soul with peace."

Here are a few examples of how you can use this:

  • Lay your hands on the part of your body that causes you pain or discomfort.

  • Use Traditional Hand Positions for Self-Care as a guide, spending 5-10 minutes (or as much time as needed) in each position.

  • Lay down with your hands resting on yourself- your abdomen or heart, wherever feels natural and comfortable. Imagine clean, pure water washing through you, quenching what needs to be nourished, and flushing away any toxins.

  • Lay down with your hands comfortably resting on you, sending yourself Reiki as you peacefully fall asleep. This can be used if you wake up in the middle of the night as well. If you have insomnia, this helps focus on something positive and relaxing while you are alert.
4. Seal the act with words of Thanks.

Only we can open ourselves to healing.
Healing takes strength and courage.

Notice how Reiki feels for you. Some people experience temperature differences in their hands, or tingling, or peace and relaxation throughout the body.

You can draw an invisible Cho Ku Rei anywhere. It is an affirmation of light and healing that enjoys creative use. Try drawing it in the air, imagine "moving" it to where ever you want, sealing it with a "Thank You." Enjoy the freedom of finding your style.

It takes practice to calm your mind and stay focused. Chant the symbol name to keep you on track and mentally engaged. If your thoughts pull you away, catch yourself each time and pull yourself back into your session. Be compassionate and patient with yourself. You are still sending Reiki even if your mind wanders for a few minutes.

Using Reiki does not mean that you won't feel painful emotions; that is a part of being alive. It does help ride the waves of emotions. You might even begin to feel more emotions because it feels safe to do so. Denying love, anger, or any emotions can be toxic to the body, mind, and spirit.

You may feel emotionally drained after giving Reiki to yourself or others, or you may feel energized. Some believe Reiki cannot deplete your energy; however, if you tend to be empathic, you might notice feeling a little depleted. Saying an affirmation, such as  "What is yours stays with you, what is mine stays with me," can be helpful when giving Reiki to others.

Reiki does not control or change circumstances to fit our desired outcome. It allows us to stay centered, connecting with our inner strength to manage life better.
